Councilman Keiffer J. Mitchell, Jr. is running for mayor to represent all of Baltimore's neighborhoods in City Hall. This blog chronicles the campaign and will be used to keep supporters in the loop and on-message as we spread the word about Keiffer's vision for the city.

Keiffer concedes

Keiffer just delivered his concession speech to a room full of enthusiastic supporters. There isn't too much more to say except that we just didn't get the votes. I know how appreciative Keiffer is of the support he's received, and he'll thank you for it himself tomorrow.

Selecting the new police commissioner

Keiffer today called for a more open and less politicized search for the new police commissioner, insisting that the interim mayor move the search out of the shadows. The fact is, Dixon's "search" has been done in secret. We don't know whether she has interviewed other candidates, who was responsible for the search, who was consulted, or whether the officers and commanders were involved.

Dixon's attack ad backfires

With a new ad that went up today, Sheila Dixon is trying to rattle Keiffer's position as the public safety candidate. The good news for us is that it's backfiring. Her strategy all along has been to essentially ignore the other candidates and simply run as the incumbent mayor. It's called a "Rose Garden" campaign. That's why she rarely participates in forums and debates.

The numbers just don't add up

In a weak attempt at convincing Baltimoreans that crime isn't as bad as the news media (and the 177 murders) would lead you to believe, the interim-mayor has long maintained that crime was actually declining overall. In Dixon's world, it's only the murder rate that is spiraling out of control.

New commissioner, same failed strategies

Keiffer has said all along that although Hamm should be fired, ultimately it's the Interim-Mayor that has set the strategy on fighting crime. Rather than use the change of commissioner as an opportunity to invest in new tactics for fighting crime, Dixon is keeping the status quo! No change in strategy. This in its own right is stunning, but when you think about it, it's actually worse.

Only the Beginning: Giving the Community a Fighting Chance

I have introduced new legislation to give the police more flexibility and authority to shut down properties that are dangerous to their neighborhoods. The bill I offered is simple. When passed, police and housing officials will be able to seek a padlock order after two incidents of homicide, assault, gun possessions, and gang activity occur at a property within a defined time period. This will help the police and community to work together to prevent recurring violent crimes that end up negatively defining and destroying a neighborhood.

A Pay Raise that Doesn't Add Up

President Rawlings Blake has promised to schedule a hearing on the proposed pay raise soon. I plan to hold her to this promise. Otherwise, public opinion is being stifled and the people of Baltimore are being denied the opportunity to speak. When the citizens of Baltimore approved the creation of the Compensation Commission by referendum, they did not waive their opportunity for public comment. I would also hope that Interim Mayor Dixon would be more vocal in this effort. By allowing this pay proposal to become law without a proper hearing, we would all be forfeiting what the voters sent us here for: to be leaders.

Baltimore Interfaith Hospitality Network: Hope Into Action at Work

Tonight I had the pleasure of eating dinner and spending time with those involved with the Baltimore Interfaith Hospitality Network, or BIHN. For those who aren't aware, the BIHN is a network of 26 Baltimore-area religious congregations who provide hope and shelter to homeless families. The congregations provide food and shelter, but as I learned from talking to some families they also provide help and support to get these families back on their feet.

A New Day for Baltimore

Not to act as the Council did this evening would be a failure of our duties as public servants. The citizens of Baltimore have placed in us the faith that we will act decisively when issues such as this one present themselves before us. They do not want us to abdicate this responsibility for political expediency. It is about leadership.

This past weekend, I went into Waverly to hear from people on Baltimore City public education, an issue that I am making the cornerstone of my campaign.
